How to Create a Resume: Step-by-Step
When you are wondering how to create a resume, it’s helpful to break down the process into manageable steps. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make a job resume that stands out:
- Choose the Right Resume Format
There are different types of resumes, and choosing the right one depends on your career situation. The three main resume formats are:
The most popular resume format is chronological. In reverse chronological sequence, it begins with your most recent position and moves through your work history. For people who have a strong professional history in the same industry, this format is perfect.
Functional Resume: This type of resume emphasizes your abilities and credentials above your employment history.
Combination Resume: A hybrid of the chronological and functional formats, this resume type highlights both your skills and work experience, giving a balanced view of your capabilities.
- Begin with a compelling objective or resume summary.
An objective statement or quick synopsis should be the first thing on your resume. This section allows you to introduce yourself and explain what you will bring to the table. While a summary focuses on your skills and achievements, an objective is typically used by those who are new to the workforce or changing careers.
For example:
What’s the purpose of a resume and the reason why is it important?
In summary: “Over five years of experience as a software developer has allowed me to create high-performing web applications.” Proven ability to manage projects, work collaboratively, and deliver solutions on time.”

Highlight Your Skills and Experience
Once you’ve written your summary or objective, the next section should focus on your work experience and key skills. If you’re applying for a specific job, tailor this section to highlight the most relevant skills.
Skills Section: List technical skills like programming languages, tools, or certifications, as well as soft skills like communication, leadership, or time management.
Experience Section: Include your title, the name of the company, the location, and the dates you worked at each employment. Include bullet points to describe your achievements and responsibilities, focusing on measurable results. Make use of action verbs such as “led,” “developed,” “managed,” and “increased.”
Add Your Education and Certifications
Next, add your educational background, including any degrees, diplomas, or relevant certifications. If you have specific qualifications for the job, this section is essential. Make sure to include the institution name, degree earned, and dates.

– Managed a team of 10 people.
- Quantify Your Achievements
Wherever possible, use numbers to quantify your achievements. This makes your accomplishments more concrete and impactful.
- Tailor Your Resume for Each Job
“Avoid sending the same CV to each application.” Take the time to customize it for each job, using keywords from the job description. This can help you pass through Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and show the employer that you’re the right fit.
Coverletter
Cover letter is important document as a part of the resume or cv. For instance if there is a book the front cover page gives the brief details about the book and later on the pages describe everything.

– Showcase Your Skills: Focus on 2–3 key qualifications and explain how your skills will benefit the company.
– Keep It Concise: A cover letter should never be longer than one page. Aim for 3–4 paragraphs.
– End with a Call to Action: Conclude by expressing your interest in discussing the position further and providing your contact information.
